I didn't quite know where to put this, so I took a guess.
My question is this:
Do you like to listen to music when you write? If yes, what do you like to listen too, and do you change the genre of music depending on what genre of screenplay you are trying to write?
I'm different from one time to another. Some times I like a little music in the background and other times I prefer complete silence. When I do listen to it, it's mostly "soft" guitar music like Bon Iver, Agnes Obel or Little Dragon.

Indeed I do. Usually trance music; generally an album I've heard many times before. As I write on the bus it becomes a barrier from the noises around me.

Yes. I like to listen to music while I write. I guess it quiets the noise around me and lets me focus on the story I want to write.
I generally switch it up between some playlists that I saved or favorited on playlist. It's a free service and it works well. Of course you need to be near a computer or laptop to listen. I'm not sure if it would work for Sean.

I switch back and forth, adapting to my environment and my mood as I go.
I usually start off with music to drown out the world around (live on a busy street, bedroom near the front of the house, with a bus stop outside). Typically I'll utilize movie soundtracks since they help me visualize what I'm writing and have no lyrics with which to distract me.
However, if I find I'm being unproductive, I'll sometimes kill the music and regain my focus by working in silence for a bit. That's usually after a longer session.

I write at my local Panera and need the background chatter to focus on my writing -- does that make sense?
I've found I absolutely CANNOT write at home in my office -- just doesn't work for me.

I can't listen to music and write at the same time.
Music gives me a lot of inspiration, so I listen a lot, but not while I'm writing. Then I'm focused on the script and the music rarely match the specific scene.
All other kinds of noice are no problem.

I used to write to some of my favorite movie soundtracks, often a movie with a similar genre. But now when it comes down to gaining the most focus possible, I find it's best for me to have complete silence... and occasionally a little booze to encourage the inner voices.

I always have music on at home.
I tend to listen to the same CD over and over as I write. Lately, I'm listening to Rockpile, "Seconds of Pleasure" and The Beat s/t (early 80s New Wave/Power Pop).
I keep it at a minimum volume, so I almost can't hear it, but I know it's there.

Music is about motivation. What motivates you one day may not another. I've had days that I listen to obscure Irish folk, film scores, or Miles Davis. Other days pure silence.
Anything that motivates/inspires.. and that's a moving target for me. I'm currently writing a Pirate adventure so Sea Shanty & Film scores seem to do the trick. When I wrote a period teen crime movie it was all '70's rock.
Lately though I'm about 90% silence because I don't need motivation, just concentration, to finish this 3rd act. I type this while listening to REO Speedwagon and procrastinating... so I better go now.

I'm all over the map with this one, too. With outlining, I MUST have music. Generally, like peterdwight, I seem to match the genre with the music and that can change from one genre of music to another in a single script. When I start out with the first draft, still have the music going although it probably is more instrumental/classical. When I rewrite and from then on with subsequent rewrites, I need silence. Unless, of course, the script is about music (band widows in scripts for reveiw) for which I created a soundtrack and HAD to listen to the song for that scene to get it right.

I like to listen to music that I don't have to focus on, but it also must have a beat so as to kind of keep a rhythm for me. I recently found this DJing website called r.fm where they have live sets of a lot of big DJ acts performing, and while I don't necessarily love that music, I find the style of music I am looking for (within that realm) and just go. Also, depending on what genre/time period/culture I am writing about, I sometimes like to soak in that type of music as well. For Instance, I am currently writing a piece that takes place in France after World War I, so I am trying to listen to as much Debussy and Ravel as I can.
